Life doesn't always unfold the way we expect. The loss of a loved one, divorce or the end of a relationship, becoming a caregiver, retirement, a new diagnosis, infertility, pregnancy loss, career changes, financial stress, moving, an empty nest, or other major life transitions can leave you feeling emotionally overwhelmed, anxious, depressed, or unlike yourself. Even positive changes can bring unexpected stress and emotional adjustment.
Grief and life transitions affect everyone differently. Some people experience persistent sadness, tearfulness, guilt, anxiety, irritability, difficulty concentrating, disrupted sleep, loss of motivation, or a sense of feeling emotionally "stuck." Others continue meeting their daily responsibilities while privately feeling exhausted, disconnected, or overwhelmed. When these symptoms begin affecting your relationships, work, school, sleep, or overall quality of life, additional support may be beneficial.
Seeking help doesn't mean you're weak or that you're grieving the "wrong" way. Sometimes life's challenges exceed the coping strategies that have always worked before. A comprehensive psychiatric evaluation can help determine whether you're experiencing a normal response to a major life event, an adjustment disorder, grief-related depression, or another treatable mental health condition.
Treatment is individualized and may include supportive psychotherapy, practical coping strategies, medication management when appropriate, and collaboration with your therapist or primary care provider. The goal is not to rush the grieving process or eliminate difficult emotions, but to help you regain emotional stability, improve daily functioning, and move forward while honoring your unique experiences. Telepsychiatry appointments are available for adults and older adolescents throughout California.
